The Benefits of Breastfeeding |
- The cost is much less to breastfeed than to formula feed.
- Formula preparation and bottle washing are avoided.
For the mother:
- Breastfeeding
hastens the return of her uterus to normal, by causing it to contract with every feeding.
- Hormones associated with breastfeeding cause relaxation and feelings of contentment.
- Once the initial learning period has passed, most women find breastfeeding very satisfying.
- Breastfeeding is quick and convenient: the mother simply lifts her shirt and offers hr breast. She doesn't have to frantically prepare a bottle while her baby cries impatiently
For the baby:
- Breast
milk is perfectly suited to the baby's nutritional requirements.
- Breast milk contains substances (immunoglobulings and antibodies from the mother) that provide important protection against illness.
- Breast milk changes in composition as the baby grows and his nutritional requirements change.
- Problems with allergies, indigestion, and overfeeding are fewer with breast milk than with formula.
- The milk is always at the right temperature and instantly available.
- Breastfeeding provides protection against adult obesity.
- Breastfeeding has other long-term health benefits, such as superior jaw development, reduced likelihood of asthma, and better ability to handle dietary fats.
